eBay Search Gadget for live.com

I just wrapped up my session at MIX, and other than completely losing my voice this morning before the session, it went really well! I presented on using eBay Web Services to build a live.com gadget, and you can now go and add the gadget to your live.com page by clicking the button below:

Add Gadget to Live.com

Its still a beta, but it is pretty cool, and I'd love to get feedback on it!

We also announced that the gadget has been open sourced in the eBay Community Codebase: https://searchgadget.codebase.ebay.com

My voice came back enough for me to talk through the session, and there were some great questions from the audience about how we built the gadget.

eBay Search RSS Feeds Previewed at MIX

I'm sitting in Dean H's IE7 presentation, and he has been demoing lots of cool new stuff in the browser. One of the things that Dean demoed was eBay RSS feeds that include support for Microsoft's Simple List Extensions. In the demo Dean loaded an eBay RSS feed in IE7 and showed how you can sort the eBay listings via standard eBay data fields like price and time left (all this thanks to the extensions). Dean didn't really mention what it was he was demoing, so here it is:

eBay will roll out RSS feeds for search later this week

More on this in our official announcement, and on the eBay Developers Program blog.

Every time you do an eBay search, you will see an RSS button on the bottom of the screen that give you a feed for that search. Almost all of the advanced search options are supported for search feeds, which gives you great flexibility over the feeds that you can create. The search feeds as well as the existing eBay Store feeds support Simple List Extensions, which makes them work great in IE7, while still being usable in any feed reader that supports standard RSS 2.0. Hopefully, other feed readers will start to support these extensions now that eBay and others have put them to good use.

Given the dynamic nature of eBay, with new listings coming into the system all the time, it is easy to see why these feeds can be incredibly useful.

Other stuff that was demoed/talked about that were interesting:

  • Ability to easily change the browser home page, including setting a tab set as the home page
  • Better security settings
  • Better CSS support
  • Infocard (cool demo, but I'm still confused by the concept)
